Pavilion Theatre

The Pavilion Theatre is the cultural heart of Rhyl — a 1,000-seat venue on the central promenade that has kept the town's entertainment tradition alive through the long decades of the resort's decline. It is, without question, one of the most important institutions in the town.

History

The original Pavilion Theatre was a Victorian masterpiece: five ornate domes, a grand entrance, and a programme that in its heyday brought some of the biggest names in British entertainment to this North Wales resort. It stood at the pier head and was inseparable from the identity of Edwardian Rhyl. Its demolition in 1974 — a decision that still provokes bitterness among those old enough to remember it — removed a genuinely irreplaceable building.

The current New Pavilion opened in 1991, built on the central promenade at a cost of several million pounds. It is not architecturally distinguished in the way its predecessor was, but it functions excellently as a performing arts venue. Its 1,000-seat auditorium, flexible staging, and reasonable sightlines make it suitable for everything from touring West End productions to local amateur dramatics.

What's On

The Pavilion's programme is one of Rhyl's genuine strengths. Touring musicals visit regularly — shows that play the major regional theatre circuit include Rhyl on their itineraries because the venue can accommodate them. Stand-up comedy, tribute acts, children's shows, and variety evenings fill the calendar throughout the year. The annual pantomime is a tradition that sells out early and is taken seriously: this is proper panto, not a perfunctory booking, and families return year after year.

1891 Restaurant and Bar

The 1891 Restaurant and Bar operates within the Pavilion building, named for the year Rhyl's original pavilion opened. It is one of Rhyl's better dining options — a casual brasserie-style menu with good sea views, suited to pre-theatre dinners, lunches, and post-show drinks. The name is a gentle act of historical memory in a town that has lost much of its Victorian fabric.
