Rhyl Miniature Railway

The Rhyl Miniature Railway holds a quietly remarkable distinction: it is the oldest continuously operating miniature railway in Britain. It has been running since 1911 — through two world wars, the death and rebirth of the British seaside, and 114 years of North Wales weather. It is one of those things that, in context, becomes genuinely moving.

The Railway

The railway operates on a 15-inch gauge track running approximately one mile around the perimeter of the Marine Lake. Trains run steam and diesel locomotives (the steam engines are the real treat) hauling open carriages along a flat, lakeside circuit. The journey takes around fifteen minutes, which is exactly long enough for children and adults alike. The lake views, particularly on a calm morning, are lovely.

The Rhyl Steam Preservation Trust has operated the railway since 1991, staffed almost entirely by volunteers who put an enormous amount of effort and knowledge into maintaining and running the historic fleet. The care and enthusiasm of the volunteers is palpable; this is not a ride being operated out of obligation, it is a labour of love.

History

The railway was established by WJ Bassett-Lowke and opened in 1911. At the height of the resort's popularity, it carried thousands of passengers each year. When the town's fortunes declined, the railway's future looked uncertain; the Trust's formation and subsequent decades of voluntary operation saved it. Several of the locomotives date from the railway's earliest years and have been painstakingly restored.

Events

The railway holds a programme of special events throughout the year, including steam galas, Santa specials in December, and themed running days.
