Rhyl sits on the North Wales coast with a maritime climate: mild, moderately wet, and — by Welsh standards — surprisingly sunny. The old boast of "Sunny Rhyl" was not entirely marketing fiction: the town historically recorded above-average sunshine hours compared with inland Wales.
When to Go
July and August are the peak season months: warmest temperatures (average daily maxima of 19–21°C), busiest beaches, all attractions open. This is also when Rhyl is at its most crowded and prices for accommodation are highest. The Rhyl Airshow typically falls in this window — spectacular, but it brings large crowds.
June and September offer a good compromise: the weather is generally warm, the beaches are less crowded than in peak summer, and accommodation is easier to find. June in North Wales can be glorious; September offers the bonus of lower prices and the beginning of autumn colour in the inland valleys.
May and October are shoulder months. Rhyl in May with its gorse-covered hillsides behind the coast road and the beach to yourself is a genuinely lovely experience. October can be grey and wet, but the light has a quality that photographers appreciate, and the town has a quiet dignity out of season.
Winter (November to March) is honest: cold, can be very windy, and many seasonal attractions are closed. But the beach in winter storms is extraordinary — wild and loud and entirely unlike the summer version. Off-season Rhyl is for people who appreciate the unvarnished version of a seaside town.

What to Wear
A windproof layer is the single most useful item on the North Wales coast, even in summer. The sea breeze is consistent and can make a 20°C day feel much cooler than it looks. Sun cream in summer is not optional — the UV levels on a clear August day at the coast catch people out who don't think of Wales as a sunburn destination. Waterproofs are common sense from October to April.
